【和訳・解説】"False Prophet" - J.Cole｜

J.Coleのシングルには本当に素晴らしいものが多いですが、その中でも今回はKanye Westへの教唆を含み話題になった"False Prophet"を紹介します。（今と立場は逆ですね）

[解説]

"false prophet"はマタイによる福音書第７章第１５節”にせ預言者を警戒せよ。彼らは、羊の衣を着てあなたがたのところに来るが、その内側は強欲なおおかみである。”から来ています。これは、J.Coleがインダストリーに足を踏み入れる前にまさに預言者のようにあがめていたアーティストたちの化けの皮が、彼らの世界になじんでいくごとにはがれていったという経験とリンクさせています。

大志を抱いて業界に入ったのにも関わらず、だんだんと汚れていく恐怖がこのIntroでは表現されています。

Verse 1はKanye Westに向かって書かれたものであると、J.Coleは公式に明かしています。Kanyeは様々な精神疾患を抱えており、近年は異常行動が目立ちます。"I am a God"という曲があるように、エゴが肥大化しているのは明らかです。

[解説]

Kanye Westのスタイルの変化はこれまでにも多くの議論を生んできました。

Old Kanyeと呼ばれる初期のスタイルで生み出されたアルバム（Graduationくらいまでですね）は現代でもまさにマスターピースであり、その再来を望む声はいまだに多いです。

また、彼がインダストリー全体を改革し、常に新しい風を吹かせてきた天才であることにはだれも異論がないでしょう。ただ、彼の問題のある言動によって近年はキャンセルを受けることもありました。（J.Coleが預言者なのかも）このシングルがリリースされたのは2016年でありそこから早くも8年が経過していますが、Kanye Westが昔ほどの輝きを得れていないのは確かなことなのかもしれません。

[解説]

ご存じの方も多いように、当時Kanyeの妻はKim Kardashianでした。

彼女は一家のリアリティショーである「カーダシアン家のお騒がせライフ」で一躍有名になりましたが、これも皮肉なものでどこまでリアルなのか検討がつきません。よく取りざたされる彼女の整形に関しても"fake"ととらえられるでしょうか。

彼はBlack Lives Matterに逆行したり、大統領選に出馬したりと世間を騒がせてきましたが、周りに誰もとがめる人がいないのかもしれません。（多分言っても聞かないでしょうが）

これはKanyeに対してだけ言っている、というわけではなく、成功するとイエスマンが集まるのは普遍的なことのように思われます。アーティストとして成功する前からの仲間とトラブルを起こすのはよくあることですよね。

[解説]

ゴーストライターはヒップホップに長く横たわる問題です。特に話題に出されるのはDrakeですが、彼に限った話ではなく業界全体に根付いています。

新しいスタイルの流行りに乗る（trapとかjerseyとか）ことは悪いことではなく、革新的であり続けることも一つの義務だとは思いますが、“ブレる”ことは避けたいですね。

[解説]

ここは特にKanye Westへの意識が感じられるところとなっており、彼の過激な言動の数々は内なる苦しみからくるものだとしています。

"The Life Of Pablo"の"I Love Kanye"というトラックで、彼は昔の方がよかったというファンの意見を歌詞に取り入れました。（"My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"が最高傑作だとする声も根強いですがどうなんでしょう）

[解説]

このVerseはJ.Coleの友人でありラッパーのWaleに宛てられたものだといわれています。2015年（この曲が出た前年ですね）、Waleはレーベルを共にするMeek Millとの確執を深めていました。Meek MillはWaleが気に入らず、レーベルから追い出そうとしていたのです。傍からみていたJ.Coleからすればとても気にかかって仕方がなかったのでしょう。

[解説]

純粋に音楽への愛を動機として成功を重ねていくことは相当難しいことのように思われます。J.ColeはFalse Prophetsと先人たちを批判しますが、自分は実際のところどうであろうかと自問しているのですね。

ファンからの崇拝はKendrick Lamarもよく扱うトピックです。"Mortal Man"や"Loyalty"などで彼は、ファンに忠誠を求めています。トップアーティストならではの悩みなのかもしれません。これはVerse 1の"yes man"のくだりと重なる部分があります。

J.Coleはファーストアルバムである"Cole World: The Sideline Story"をリリースする際に、マーケティングのために先駆けてシングル"Who Dat"を発表しました。その際、彼はキャッチーであること（今でいうバズること）を念頭において曲を作ったために、憧れの存在であったNasの批判を浴びることになります。

J.Coleは常に謙虚な男というペルソナを崩しませんでした。（最近はどうか知りませんが）

ファンに感謝を忘れず、自己研鑽を続ける彼の姿勢は、False Prophetsを遠ざけ、より高みに上るための近道なのかもしれません。
